Polish classes for adults - teacher Hanna Bilyk
Welcome to the "Essential Polish" – a language course for adults and youth (age 16+), offered over four terms in 2023. This most essential Polish course designed exclusively for our students, provides a smooth progression for beginners to build their spoken and written language skills. A wide collection of authentic texts, audio and video recordings selected by the teacher will ensure direct contact with the contemporary Polish language in weekly 2-hour lessons.
Commencing in February 2023. Registration is now open!
Szanowni Państwo, our most essential language course is a recommended choice for beginners who want to speak, read and write in Polish for personal, travel or business use, or people who may already have some Polish learning experience and now want to continue developing communicative language skills and build cultural awareness.
The thematic approach will allow participants to develop vocabulary sets that will form the foundation of a broad understanding of the language. Backed by evidence-based pedagogical methods and students' end-of-course evaluation, this program will focus on language communicative functions, starting with the common expressions, pronunciation, basics grammar and vocabulary of approx. 1500 most essential Polish words.
The lessons are interesting but quite intense at the same time. You will need to individually practice the vocabulary and new expressions already learned in the lesson, also outside of class, so you don't get lost as we move on. All of the NSPSS teachers are Polish native speakers and have experience in teaching groups of adults, youth and children.
Recent years have brought tremendous changes also in the educational sector. We have incorporated blended learning methods and new online tools into the program, adapted to the workplace constraints resulting from the limitations brought about by the pandemic.
Curriculum
What you will learn from this course. The curriculum includes 4 Units that gradually develop your receptive and productive skills, culminating in a fun class-project called KLASÓWKA, which allows students to apply their knowledge and present fantastic communicative language skills by the end of the year.
UNIT 1. Polish Vocabulary: Meeting People.
„Cześć, jak się masz?”
Unit 1, is your first step towards exploring the basics of Polish pronunciation and grammar, and begin building a working vocabulary of popular Polish words and expressions. You will be able to talk about yourself, your family and friends and begin to explore the cultural context of the Polish-speaking world through a series of videos and interactive exercises practicing speaking, reading and writing. To help students learn Polish grammar effectively and have fun at the same time there are educational games included in each lesson (e.g. Quizzes to practice three tenses: Present, Past and Future).
UNIT 2. Polish Vocabulary: Cultural Experience
„Czym chata bogata tym rada”
Starting in Term 2, this second Unit of the "Essential Polish" course will build on the basic vocabulary you learned in Unit 1, and you will begin to build the skills necessary to express your likes and dislikes orally and in writing. You’ll also begin to explore some of the common cultural experiences of the Polish-speaking communities through a virtual visit to the food markets, fairs, song festivals etc. A series of interactive tasks and videos will provide opportunities for practice and exploration of the Polish cultural context – music, theatre literature and visual arts.
UNIT 3. Polish Vocabulary: Sports, Travel and Home
„Polska Gola!”
Ready for the big game? Building on the vocabulary and skills that you have already mastered, from July we will introduce new expressions that prepare you to discuss sports, favourite pastimes and politics - important cultural elements of the Polish people living anywhere in the world. You’ll also add new vocabulary relating to travel and living arrangements. This unit also introduces the simple ways to talk about future and past and you will add to your vocabulary collection of new action verbs.
UNIT 4. Polish Vocabulary: Social Events and Careers
„Sto lat, sto lat, niech żyje, żyje nam”
In October, when Unit 4 begins we will concentrate on a new vocabulary such as events, going out, fashion, occupations, and careers. The unit will also expand on your Future Tense skills (czas przyszły złożony) for describing the future from the present point of view. Students will begin to speak about events, future plans, things they desire or pursuing professional goals. This is the final unit before the whole class undertakes a project called KLASÓWKA that showcases mastery of the Polish vocabulary and grammar learned during the year.

Beginning Polish for Adults, 2018 - Teacher Anna Kalisiak
This course aims to give grown-up students with little or no prior language knowledge a bit of taste of the Polish language.
Ready to polish your Polish? Boost your vocabulary while enjoying simple, short stories and dialogues for the beginners and beyond.
Students will be encouraged to seek and use simple sentences to communicate and have fun. In class, you will be inspired to use the grammar as a result of self-discovery and slowly introduce to more challenging language structures and phrases – effortlessly expanding vocabulary along the way.
- You'll start talking Polish from day one
- You'll gain confidence while learning simple techniques for memorising words and phrases
- You'll have plenty of time to improve while learning basic Polish vocabulary and grammar
The core vocabulary and spoken conversations used at this level will widen students lexical knowledge around the following topics:
• Expressing politeness
• People want to know who you are
• People want to know what you like
• Come, let us drink coffee together
• To be on time
• The world is full of colours
• We are a big family
• Everybody is different
• Let us spent time together
• One of our busiest weeks
• There is not always summer
• Cooking can be fun
While the communication aspect and interaction are superior, we will still focus on all language skills simultaneously: speaking, listening, reading and writing. It is beneficial for students to experience situational context learning, providing more opportunities to practice at a slow rate of speech, memorise vocabulary and interact with each other. Therefore, the proposed system and activities can help students, particularly novices, listen to and speak Polish in familiar everyday situations.
Don't give up – language acquisition is a long-term process that develops naturally and in stages that differ for individual learners.
